What is Menopause?

Menopause is the stage of a woman’s life when her menstrual periods permanently end and her ability to reproduce naturally ceases. It usually occurs between the ages of 45-55 and is characterised by various physical and emotional symptoms due to changes in hormone levels. Menopause is a natural and inevitable process in women’s lives.

Stages of Menopause

 

1.Perimenopause:

  • It is known as the transition period to menopause and covers several years before menopause.
  • During this period, estrogen and progesterone hormone levels begin to fluctuate.
  • Irregular menstrual periods and the first menopausal symptoms are seen in this phase.
  • The perimenopause period can last from several months to several years.

2.Menopause:

  • A woman is considered to have entered menopause if she has no menstruation for 12 consecutive months.
  • The average age of menopause is 51 years, but there may be individual differences.
  • Hormone production is significantly reduced and fertility ceases.

3.Postmenopause:

  • Refers to the period after menopause.
  • Symptoms of menopause may continue but decrease over time.
  • During this period, the risk of osteoporosis and heart disease may increase due to low estrogen levels.

    Symptoms of Menopause

     

    Hot flushes, night sweats, irregular menstrual periods, vaginal dryness, sleep disorders, emotional changes, weight gain, changes in hair and skin, decrease in bone density.

    The discomforts caused by menopause can be controlled with hormone treatments by specialised physicians and changes in lifestyle.

    Menopause is a natural life stage that every woman experiences and the severity of its symptoms may vary from person to person. With appropriate treatment and lifestyle changes, menopausal symptoms can be managed and quality of life can be maintained. Regular health checks during and after menopause are critical in preventing long-term health problems.
